Book those internal legs as early as the long-haul one, because domestic seats inside the host country go first during a major event. Search each leg on its own as well: sometimes two one-ways beat the through fare, and we say so when they do. Over shorter distances, rail or bus can be cheaper again.

That depends on your passport and on the destination, so check the host country's official guidance as soon as you commit. Processing slows to a crawl before a major event. Visa-waiver schemes such as ESTA for the United States and eTA for Canada are faster but still need approval before you fly, and a Schengen or UK appointment in Amman can take weeks to come up.
